TANIT, A SENHORA DAS COBRAS FENÍCIAS, por Artur Felisberto.

Figura 1: Tanit.

...One of Her names in both Phoenicia and North Africa, means Serpent Lady, from "tan" = serpent, with a feminine ending "-it". Scholar Saul Olyan gives an especially cogent argument concerning this later Punic/ Carthaginian goddess as a form of ´Asherah. One of the symbols of Tanith is often referred to as a caduceus, what looks like two ribbons on a pole. It is actually two serpents on or twined around a tree or asherah-pole. A Punic stele has a complex grouping of symbols. At the top is an up-turned crescent, representing the heavens, and a wreath, possibly of snakes. Below is Tanith in a triangular garment from shoulders to feet, Her arms bent upward and outward, holding in each hand a cornucopia, out of which come a pomegranate on Her left and a bunch of grapes on Her right. On each side of Her, below Her waist and arms, is a dove.

Ba'alat Tanith is the Great Mother and she takes many forms. Her appearance may vary with the seasons as in the fallow of the year she is "`Almana" meaning, "The Widow." In this form she wears a black hooded cloak and can be seen weeping for all those who have passed on. Her hair is touched with grey but her face is still beautiful. During the growing season she appears in green surrounded by dark, luxurious forests. In this form she may be a huntress equipped with bow and accompanied by hounds to defend her forests from all who would harm them. But most often she is `Ashera, the Mother of all. Tanith is Queen of the mysteries. She represents the ultimate reality knowable to humans without crossing over. She is the patroness of witches and shamans. She is the guardian and revealer of transcendental knowledge. She offers the fruit of knowledge to those who would dare taste it and her dragons protect her domain from those who are unready.

Kanikanihia = Hawaiian goddess of Love

Again from finds from the Sinai, She is called Dat ba'thani, Lady of the Serpent. Another name of Asherah in the first milleneum BCE is Chawat, which is Hawah in Hebrew and Eve in English. Her full title is Rabat Chawat ´Elat, Great Lady Eve the Goddess, and is associated with the serpent. Thus, Chawa / Eve is probably a form of Asherah as a Serpent Goddess. As a snake goddess, She was also represented by bronze serpent forms, examples of which have been found in archaeological excavations in the Levant. In fact the Nehush-tan, literally the Bronze Serpent which in traditional Jewish myth is associated with Moses, is much more likely an emblem of Asherah. It too was removed from the Jerusalem temple the same time as the asherah objects.

Also called: Tanith, Tent, Thinit, Tinnit, Rat-tanit; Tanis is the Greek version of Her name. She was called "Lady of Carthage", "Lady of the Sanctuary", and "the Face of Ba'al". The Romans called Her Dea Caelestis, "the Heavenly Goddess", Virgo Caelestis "the Heavenly Virgin", and Caelestis Afrorum Dea, "the African/Carthaginian Heavenly Goddess", as well as the assimilated name Juno Caelestis.

She was identified with Aphrodite, Demeter, and Artemis by the Greeks and with Juno by the Romans, especially their Juno Lucina, Goddess of Light and Childbirth. The Romans also associated Her with the Magna Mater, the Great Mother, Rhea or Kybele.

(...) Noteworthy here is the fact that numerous epithets and attributes of the great goddesses-hitherto mysterious and unexplained-receive immediate clarification if indeed the cataclysmic fall of the great goddess occurred in the form of a comet-like object. An epithet of Semele, tanuetheira - "with the stretched out hair" - has an obvious significance if a comet was the source of reference.

Tan, Cret. for Zeus (q.v.). Tanu-etheira, hê, long-haired, with flowing hair, Semela Pind. O. 2.26. Tanuô,(…) stretch, strain. Etheira, hê, hair, poet. Noun, Hom. only in Il., and always in pl., either of a horse's mane. [1]

Meretseger < Mer(e)-(t)se-ger ó Net-ger
